Throughout her personal and professional journey, Darné Lang has always been driven to help others grow and thrive. Whether supporting children in special education classrooms or helping her team at Merritt drive meaningful change in affordable housing, Darné’s work has always centered on care, connection, and community.
After graduating from Humboldt State University with a double major in Zoology and Marine Biology, Darné spent several years working as an Environmental Educator at science camps across California. Although she loved inspiring young students, she eventually transitioned to a paraprofessional role in a special education classroom — despite being so different, both experiences honed her communication skills and deepened her appreciation for meaningful teamwork.
“I learned early on that collaboration can make a real difference,” she says. “Partnering with others has taught me the value of patience, adaptability, and creating an environment where people can succeed together as they work toward a common goal.”
In time, Darné felt ready for a new chapter — one that would challenge her and build on her skill set. While she hadn’t initially envisioned herself in the affordable housing field, she had long admired Merritt and the significant impact it was making across California.
There were so many aspects of the team and its mission that spoke to her – all elements she desired in her next role. From passionate people to its significant statewide impact, there was so much about Merritt that deeply resonated with her. When an opportunity for an Administrative Assistant arose, Darné decided to put her hat into the ring.
Pursuing the world of affordable housing took her by surprise, but in retrospect, Darné had actually come full circle. Having grown up in low-income housing, Darné understands firsthand the impact that safe, stable homes can have on families.
“It’s deeply gratifying to now give back in a meaningful way,” she says. “This work truly impacts lives for generations.”
Since joining Merritt a year and a half ago as the Administrative Assistant, Darné has become an integral part of the organization. She began her journey supporting Merritt’s President & CEO, Operations Manager, and Impact Manager. While much of her work today continues to focus on those areas, Darné’s role has naturally expanded over time.
She now has increased responsibility for the organization’s business operations and events — including those that directly support Merritt’s most significant initiative: Commitment to California.
As part of her many day-to-day responsibilities, Darné coordinates logistics for conferences, manages the President & CEO’s schedule and travel, and plans key events for Merritt Scholars. Over time, her role has grown to include assisting the CFO and managing accounting for the Merritt Scholars program — giving her a behind-the-scenes look at how the organization’s mission comes to life.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to see a property in my own neighborhood that I know Merritt helped make possible,” she shares. “And I’m equally proud of the role I play today helping our team grow tomorrow’s leaders in affordable housing.”
Looking ahead, Darné is excited to continue growing with Merritt. She’s eager to take on new challenges that continue to level up the organization and strengthen her skill set, particularly in finance. She is especially energized by opportunities to collaborate across departments.
“I love how everyone at Merritt works together toward a shared mission,” she says. “It takes so many partners — developers, investors, community members — to make affordable housing possible. Being part of that collective effort is inspiring.”
From classrooms to conference rooms, Darné Lang’s path has always been guided by purpose and service. At Merritt, that same dedication continues to shine — keeping the organization running smoothly and its mission moving forward.
