January 30, 2025

January 30, 2025–Oakland, CA

Jonathan Donis is a 2024-2025 Merritt Scholar, graduating from Stanford University with a B.A. in Urban Studies. Jonathan is an incoming Business Development Analyst at EAH Housing.

  1. Why did you apply to Merritt Scholars?

I applied to the Merritt Scholars program because of its mentorship component, which stood out to me as a valuable resource. At the time, I didn’t know many professionals in the affordable housing field and believed having a mentor could help connect me with resources and individuals at organizations I was interested in. The program’s financial support to complete my degree, access to affordable housing conferences, and the opportunity to join a cohort of like-minded students passionate about the field were major factors that drew me to apply.

  1. What drew you to the affordable housing field? Or, why do you want to work in affordable housing?

I’m a product of affordable housing, and I’m aware of the profound impact that stable housing can have on individuals and communities. At the same time, I’ve been acquainted with the stark realities of housing instability that others in my community faced. Growing up in Los Angeles and exploring my interests in real estate and urban planning in college ignited my desire to be involved in urban investment and equity, particularly with a focus on addressing housing issues.

  1. What interests you about working in affordable housing?

I’m driven by a passion for creating cities that work for everyone, and affordable housing is a vital part of achieving that vision. Having had prior internship experience in urban planning and real estate, I know each project brings unique obstacles and opportunities. I’m energized by the idea of turning visions into reality, knowing that my work contributes to building stronger communities.

  1. What are some of your career goals or areas of interest that you would like to explore in your career?

I’m looking to explore roles in affordable housing finance and development and get experience finding creative solutions to complex challenges, such as financing, zoning, and community engagement. My goal is to eventually be a well-known leader in the affordable housing field who is recognized as someone who can get opportunities through the door and done.

  1. What’s been a favorite part about Merritt Scholars?

I’ve enjoyed attending conferences where I was able to connect with professionals in the affordable housing field with the help of my mentor. It’s also been great to attend the conferences with other students in the cohort to build community and have the support of Merritt staff.

Congratulations and thank you for sharing your experience, Jonathan! We are excited to have you in the affordable housing industry!
